Amidst the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the progression of mass communication and color printing technologies catalyzed the emergence of trade cards as an instrumental tool for marketing and endorsing products across diverse industries, including tobacco, bubble gum, and various food sectors. Notably, department stores also embraced the utilization of trade cards as a means to both advertise products and attract potential clientele. The spectrum of themes depicted on these cards encompassed a wide array, ranging from natural landscapes to portraits of eminent figures and historical vignettes. Implicitly, these representations mirrored the prevalent values, consumer ethos, and the economic and social milieu of that epoch.
This specific series encompasses trade cards produced by the Poulain company in the early 20th century, featuring French and foreign medals, totaling ten cards. Throughout its history, the Poulain company pioneered several significant innovations. One pivotal milestone occurred in AD 1846, attributed to the brand’s founder, Victor-Auguste Poulain, who introduced the technique for crafting chocolate bars. This innovation revolutionized the presentation of chocolate, transitioning it from its prior states as powder or liquid to a solid bar form. Additionally, in AD 1872, the company became the pioneering producer of milk chocolate. These groundbreaking advancements had a profound impact on the chocolate market during that period.
Subsequently, the Poulain company underwent changes in ownership: acquired by Cadbury in AD 1988, later sold to Kraft Foods in AD 2010, and subsequently transitioned to Mondelez International.
