This is a 10 Mark gold coin issued by the German Empire in AD 1903. The obverse features a right-facing profile of Wilhelm II, the reigning German Emperor and King of Prussia at the time. Surrounding the portrait is an inscription in German stating his titles: “WILHELM II DEUTSCHER KAISER KÖNIG V. PREUSSEN” (Wilhelm II, German Emperor and King of Prussia). Below the portrait, the letter “A” indicates the mint mark of the Berlin State Mint, responsible for the coin’s production.

The reverse of the coin displays the imperial black eagle emblem, symbolising the German Empire. The denomination “10 MARK” is inscribed along the bottom edge, flanked on each side by a five-pointed star. At the top edge, the inscription “DEUTSCHES REICH 1903” (German Empire 1903) indicates the issuing authority and year. The coin’s edge is adorned with decorative floral motifs.

The German Empire, established in AD 1871, was a unified nation formed under Prussian leadership, bringing together various German states. Wilhelm II, the third emperor of this empire, ascended the throne in AD 1888. His reign was marked by an aggressive expansion of colonial territories and the navy, aiming to rival the British Empire’s global dominance. This ambition ultimately contributed to the tensions leading to World War I.

By October AD 1918, the German military, exhausted from prolonged conflict, faced widespread mutinies both on the front lines and in cities at home. Consequently, Wilhelm II abdicated on November 9, AD 1918, and Germany began armistice negotiations with the Allies on November 11. After abdicating, Wilhelm II went into exile in the Netherlands, where he lived until his death in AD 1941 during the Nazi occupation.
