This is a 100-Qirsh gold coin issued by the Kingdom of Egypt in AD 1922, featuring a right-facing bust of then-King Fuad I on the obverse. The king wears a fez, a hat popular in the Near East since the 19th century, and his title is inscribed in Arabic along the right edge, reading “فؤاد الأول ملك مصر” (Fuad I, King of Egypt). Although Egypt had been under British control since AD 1914 under the nominally independent title of the “Sultanate of Egypt,” widespread anti-British protests erupted across Egypt in AD 1919. In response, Britain unilaterally declared Egypt’s independence on February 28, AD 1922, establishing it as the “Kingdom of Egypt,” though Britain continued to exert substantial influence. King Fuad I became the first ruler of the new Egyptian kingdom.

On the reverse side of the coin, within a solid circle, is an Ottoman-style tughra reading “المملكة المصرية,” representing the country name “Kingdom of Egypt.” Around the circle are three five-pointed stars on the left, right, and bottom. The denomination “١٠٠ غرش” (100 Qirsh) is inscribed along the top edge, with the Hijri calendar year “١٣٤٠” (1340) on the lower left and the Gregorian year “١٩٢٣” (1923) on the lower right.

After the Kingdom of Egypt was established in AD 1922, it was ruled by King Fuad I and later his son, King Farouk I. In AD 1952, a group of young military officers known as the “Free Officers,” led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, launched a coup that overthrew the pro-Western monarchy, forcing King Farouk I into exile in Italy. Nasser subsequently became the president of the Arab Republic of Egypt, playing a significant role in the Arab world and on the global stage during the early Cold War.
