This is a silver 4 Soles coin issued in AD 1858 by Bolivia, a South American nation. On the obverse, the coin depicts two Andean llamas gazing at each other beneath a coconut tree. Above the tree, nine five-pointed stars are arranged in an arc. The upper edge of the coin is inscribed in Spanish with “REPUBLICA BOLIVIANA” (Republic of Bolivia), signifying the nation. Along the lower edge, the mint location, denomination, year, and engraver’s initials are indicated: “· PTS · 4S · 1858 · F · J ·” (Potosí, 4 Soles, AD 1858, F.J.).
The reverse of the coin features a left-facing bust of Simón Bolívar, revered as Bolivia’s founding father and the nation’s namesake, wearing a laurel wreath as a symbol of victory. On August 6, AD 1825, the region formerly known as Upper Peru declared its independence, naming the new nation after Bolívar. Encircling the portrait is the inscription “LIBRE POR LA CONSTITUCION” (Free by the Constitution), symbolising the commitment to constitutional freedom. Beneath Bolívar’s shoulder is his name, inscribed as “BOLIVIAR.”
Simón Bolívar was born in what is now Venezuela and, beginning in AD 1810, seized the opportunity to join Latin America’s independence movement while Spain, the colonial power, was weakened by Napoleon’s invasion. Bolívar, along with José de San Martín, led liberation campaigns from north to south, working to free various colonies from Spanish rule. Both leaders remain celebrated across Latin America as national heroes and symbols of independence.
