This is a ½ Scudo gold coin issued in AD 1839 by Bolivia, a South American nation. The coin is notably small. Its obverse side features elements from the Bolivian national emblem used between AD 1826 and AD 1888: a sun rising behind the Andes Mountains, with a llama positioned to the left of the mountains, and a bundle of harvested wheat to the right. Below these symbols is a curved six-pointed star. The upper edge is inscribed in Spanish with “REPUBLICA BOLIVIANA” (Bolivian Republic). The lower edge of the coin displays the mint location, denomination, year, and the engraver’s initials as follows: “· PTS · ½ · 1839 · L · M ·” (Potosí, ½ Scudo, AD 1839, L.M.).
The reverse side of this coin depicts a right-facing bust of Simón Bolívar, revered as Bolivia’s founding father and the inspiration for the country’s name. Bolívar, a Latin American hero, is shown in military attire. Upon declaring independence on August 6, AD 1825, the region then known as Upper Peru established itself as Bolivia, named in Bolívar’s honour. Surrounding his portrait is the inscription “LIBRE POR LA CONSTITUCION” (Free by the Constitution) and his name, “BOLIVIAR.”
Simón Bolívar was born in what is now Venezuela and, beginning in AD 1810, seized the opportunity to join Latin America’s independence movement while Spain, the colonial power, was weakened by Napoleon’s invasion. Bolívar, along with José de San Martín, led liberation campaigns from north to south, working to free various colonies from Spanish rule. Both leaders remain celebrated across Latin America as national heroes and symbols of independence.
