This is a 1-rupee silver coin issued in AD 1891 by the princely state of Alwar, located in the northwestern Indian region of Rajasthan, during the reign of its fifth ruler, Maharaja Mangal Singh.
The coin was machine-minted, with a solid circular border on the obverse. Surrounding this circle, the denomination “ONE RUPEE” and the name of the state, “ALWAR STATE,” are engraved in English, adorned with leaf motifs on either side. Within the inner circle, the ruler’s title and name, “ماہاراج سہری ساوای مانگال سینگہ باہادور” (Maharaj Shri Sawai Mangal Singh Bahadur), are inscribed in Urdu, along with the Gregorian year “۱۸۹۱” (1891).
The reverse of the coin features a left-facing bust of Queen Victoria, symbolising the British Empire, which was the suzerain state over Alwar at the time. On either side of her portrait, the English inscription “VICTORIA EMPRESS” is engraved, denoting her title as Empress of India during her youthful reign.
Alwar, one of the 22 princely states in the Rajasthan region, has a relatively brief history compared to others in the area. Its origins trace back to AD 1775, when the military leader Pratap Singh established an independent kingdom amid the disorder following the death of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. In AD 1803, the British formally recognised Alwar’s princely status, allowing it to maintain autonomy until it joined independent India in April AD 1948. During the rule of Maharaja Mangal Singh (AD 1874–1892), Alwar experienced a peak in modernisation, marked by the construction of Western-style palaces and the introduction of public amenities such as electric lighting and railways.
