This nickel coin, known as the “10 Cents Nickel Coin,” was issued in the 12th year of the Republic of China (AD 1923) by the Yunnan Provincial Mint. During this period, the Yunnan Province minted two types of nickel coins: the 10 Cents Nickel Coin and the 5 Cents Nickel Coin.

The obverse side of the nickel coin features a toothed rim on the outermost edge. Surrounding the top and bottom are the English inscriptions “YUN-NAN PROVINCE” and “10 CENTS,” respectively. The sides are adorned with floral patterns of four petals each. At the centre is the “Five-Coloured Flag,” encircled by a beaded ring that separates it from the outer English inscriptions.

The reverse side of the nickel coin also features a toothed rim on the outermost edge. The top and bottom edges are inscribed with the phrases “中華民國十二年” (12th Year of the Republic of China) and “雲南省造” (Minted in Yunnan Province) in standard script, respectively. These inscriptions are separated on either side by floral patterns with four petals. At the centre, there is a dot surrounded by the four characters “壹毫鎳幣” (10 Cents Nickel Coin), arranged in a square pattern. A beaded ring separates the inner and outer inscriptions.

After the Xinhai Revolution, Yunnan also separated from the Qing Dynasty and joined the Nationalist Government. In the 4th year of the Republic of China (AD 1915), due to Yuan Shikai’s declaration of himself as emperor, figures such as Cai E and Tang Jiyao initiated a rebellion, declaring Yunnan’s independence and launching the “National Protection War” to oppose Yuan Shikai. Although Yuan Shikai abolished the imperial system in the 5th year of the Republic of China (AD 1916) and died later that year, the provinces gradually retracted their declarations of independence. The Yunnan Army created a situation of regional fragmentation in Yunnan, with successive rulers including Tang Jiyao and Long Yun.

這枚鎳幣為民國12年（公元1923年）雲南省造幣場所發行的「壹毫鎳幣」。當時雲南省鑄有壹毫與半毫的兩種鎳幣。

鎳幣的正面，從最外圍為齒邊，再來上下分別環繞「YUN-NAN PROVINCE」與「10 CENTS」的英文字樣，中間兩側由四瓣花的圖樣隔開。正中間為「五色旗」，並用珠圈分隔最外側的英文。

鎳幣的背面最外緣一樣是齒邊，上下緣分別用標楷體環有「中華民國十二年」與「雲南省造」的字樣，兩側文字間用四瓣花的圖樣隔開。中央為原點與「壹毫鎳幣」的四字對讀，並以珠圈分隔內外的文字。

在辛亥革命後，也脫離清朝加入國民政府。民國4年（公元1915年）因袁世凱稱帝，所以蔡鍔、唐繼堯等起兵，宣布雲南獨立，並發起「護國戰爭」討伐袁世凱。雖然袁世凱於民國5年（公元1916年）取消帝制，並於同年病逝，各省陸續取消獨立。滇軍在雲南形成割據局面，先後有唐繼堯、龍雲等統治雲南。
