This coin is a denarius minted in 104 BC by the Roman Republican politician Lucius Appuleius Saturninus.
The obverse of the coin features a profile portrait of a Roman, wearing a helmet. The reverse depicts a Roman quadriga, a four-horse chariot, with a warrior holding the reins and driving the chariot. Above the chariot, the mint mark ‘C’ is inscribed, and below it, the Latin inscription ‘L·SATVRN’ appears, representing an abbreviation of the minter’s name, Lucius Saturninus.
Lucius Appuleius Saturninus was a prominent Roman politician. During a grain shortage in 104 BC, he served as a quaestor responsible for the transportation of grain. He was elected tribune of the plebs twice, using his position to challenge the authority of the Senate, which made his career highly controversial. Saturninus was murdered in a riot in Rome at the end of 100 BC.
Denarius: The denarius was a small silver coin introduced by ancient Rome around 211 BC and was one of the most common currencies in circulation until it was gradually replaced by the Antoninianus in the mid-3rd century during the Roman Empire.
