This is a 1/24 Riksdaler silver coin minted in AD 1779 during the reign of Gustav III of the Kingdom of Sweden. The Riksdaler was the currency unit in circulation within Sweden from AD 1777 to AD 1873.
The surface of the coin shows noticeable signs of corrosion, though it does not hinder the interpretation of its details. The obverse features the monogram of Gustav III, represented by the uppercase letters “GIII”, topped with a large royal crown. The upper edge bears a circular Latin inscription: “FADERNESLANDET·”, meaning “For the Fatherland”, symbolising devotion to the nation.
The reverse features a decorated orb at the centre, adorned with line patterns. Inside the orb are the three crowns, a symbol of the Kingdom of Sweden, while a large crown rests atop the orb. On either side of the orb, the denomination is inscribed as “1/24· R·” (1/24 Riksdaler). At the bottom, the coin’s minting year, “O·L 1779”, is engraved, indicating its production date.
During the reign of Gustav III, the Kingdom of Sweden encompassed not only present-day Sweden but also Finland and territories in Pomerania. Gustav III established an era of enlightened absolutism after dissolving the parliament through a military coup, consolidating his power. On March 16, AD 1792, Gustav III was assassinated at a masquerade ball held at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, where he was shot at close range by conspirators. Although he initially survived the attack, his condition worsened, and he succumbed to his injuries on March 29, AD 1792, at the age of 46.
