This is a copper coin issued in AD 1812 during the reign of King Charles XIII of Sweden, denominated as “1/12 Skilling.” The obverse features the royal monogram of Charles XIII, represented by the large inscription “CXIII,” topped with a king’s crown symbolising royal authority.
The reverse is adorned with the Swedish national emblem, the “Three Crowns.” At the centre, the denomination “SKILLING” is inscribed, with “1/12” above it indicating the fractional value, and the issuance year “1812” displayed at the bottom.
In AD 1809, King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden was deposed by discontented military officers following his defeats in war. Subsequently, Charles XIII, then Duke of Södermanland, was elected as the new king by the Swedish parliament.
In AD 1814, Charles XIII aligned with Britain as part of the Sixth Coalition during the Napoleonic Wars. As a result of the Treaty of Kiel, Sweden acquired Norway from Denmark, which had been on the losing side of the conflict. After a brief period of resistance from Norway, Charles XIII became the first monarch of the “Swedish-Norwegian Union.” This union persisted until its peaceful dissolution in AD 1905.
