Provenance: Fuchin Coin 2024

This is a gold coin minted in AD 1831 by the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, located in northern Italy. The denomination is 1 Sovrano, with “Sovrano” also translating to “King” in Italian.

The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Francis I, Emperor of Austria and King of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, adorned with a laurel wreath symbolising victory. Below the portrait, crossed laurel branches and the letter “M” represent Milan. Surrounding the image is the Latin inscription “FRANCISCUS I. D. G. AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR.”, meaning “Francis I, by the Grace of God, Emperor of Austria.”

The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, represented by a double-headed eagle, a symbol of the Austrian Empire. The eagle clutches a sword in one talon and an orb surmounted by a cross, signifying royal authority, in the other. At the centre of the eagle is a shield divided into two sections: the serpent-dragon emblem of Milan and the Lion of Saint Mark, representing Venice. Atop the shield rests the Iron Crown of Lombardy, worn during the coronation of Italian kings.

The coin’s outer Latin inscription, “HVN. BOH. LOMB. ET VEN. GAL. LOD. IL. REX. A. A.”, translates to “King of Hungary, Bohemia, Lombardy and Venetia, Galicia, Lodomeria, Illyria, Archduke of Austria.” This highlights Franz I’s role as the ruler of multiple regions under the Austrian Empire. Below the inscription, the minting year “1831” is engraved, marking the year this 1 Sovrano gold coin was struck.

The Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia was established in AD 1815 following the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars, as determined by the Congress of Vienna. The territories of Milan and Venice were united into a single kingdom under the sovereignty of the Austrian Empire, with the Austrian emperor serving as its monarch. Between AD 1859 and AD 1866, during the Second Italian War of Independence, the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia was gradually annexed by the Kingdom of Sardinia after its victories.
