This is a set of four British silver coin rings spanning the reigns of George V and George VI. Arranged from left to right, the pieces include an AD 1941 George VI 3 pence, an AD 1914 George V 3 pence, an undated George V 6 pence, and an AD 1940 George VI 3 pence.
The first three rings share a similar, minimalist design style, featuring only simple leaf motifs. The ring on the far right is larger and more intricate in design, with an openwork Maltese cross on the side and fish-scale patterns adorning both its inner and outer surfaces.
King George V and King George VI were father and son. George V reigned from AD 1910 to AD 1936, leading Britain through World War I and transforming the royal family’s title from the Germanic “Saxe-Coburg-Gotha” to the more English-sounding “Windsor.” George VI, his younger son, reigned from AD 1936 to AD 1952, guiding the nation to victory in World War II.
Between their reigns, however, was the brief tenure of George V’s eldest son, Edward VIII, who ruled for just 326 days. Groomed as heir, Edward VIII ascended to the throne upon George V’s passing on January 20, AD 1936. Yet, by December 11 of that same year, Edward abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American socialite. This unprecedented act of renunciation for love is famously remembered as “the king who gave up the throne for love.”
