This is a silver coin with a face value of ½ Écu, issued in AD 1790 during the reign of King Louis XVI of the French Bourbon dynasty. The obverse side features a left-facing bust of King Louis XVI, with the edge of his left shoulder bearing the initials “B.DUVIV.,” the mark of the engraver Pierre-Simon-Benjamin Duvivier. To the lower right of the bust is an image of a raised-foot heron, the hallmark of Jean Dupeyron de la Coste II, who became the director of the Paris Mint in 1794. Surrounding the portrait is the Latin inscription “LUD • XVI • D • G • FR • ET • NAV • REX •,” which translates to “Louis XVI, by the grace of God, King of France and Navarre.”
The reverse side of the coin features the coat of arms of the Bourbon royal family, centred as an oval shield decorated with laurel branches on either side and topped with a crown. Within the shield are three fleur-dae-lis, symbolising the royal family. Surrounding the central design is the Latin inscription “SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM,” which translates to “Blessed be the name of the Lord,” a phrase derived from Psalm 112:2 in the Bible. The issue year “1790” is also marked on this side.
During the reign of Louis XVI, France experienced the French Revolution, a pivotal event that reshaped world history. Initiated in AD 1789, the Revolution led to the establishment of France as the first republic in Europe and culminated in the execution of Louis XVI, making him the only king in French history to be executed. The upheaval that followed the Revolution created a power vacuum, allowing Napoleon Bonaparte, a military officer, to rise through the ranks and eventually ascend to power.
