This is a 10-Krona gold coin issued in AD 1901 by King Oscar II, who concurrently reigned over both Sweden and Norway. The obverse features a right-facing portrait of King Oscar II, surrounded by the Latin inscription “OSCAR II SVERIGES OCH NORGES KONUNG” (Oscar II, King of Sweden and Norway), which denotes his title. Below the portrait, the year “1901” is flanked by five-pointed stars on either side.
The reverse of the coin features the royal coat of arms of Sweden. On the lower left side, there is a mintmark from the Stockholm Mint, while on the lower right corner is the initials “E.B.,” representing the name of the supervising engraver, Emil Brusewitz. Along the upper edge, the Swedish inscription “BRÖDRAFOLKENS VÄL” (For the Welfare of Brother Peoples) reflects the motto of King Oscar II during his reign over Sweden and Norway. At the bottom, the denomination “10 KRONOR” is inscribed.
In AD 1814, following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Norway was ceded to Sweden as compensation for Denmark’s defeat, forming a united kingdom under Swedish dominance. However, during the later years of King Oscar II’s reign, tensions between Norway and Sweden grew significantly. After multiple rounds of negotiations, Norway peacefully gained independence in AD 1905, and Oscar II renounced his claim to the Norwegian throne. He passed away in AD 1907.
