This is a half-ducat gold coin issued by the Imperial Free City of Nuremberg, reflecting its independence within the Holy Roman Empire. The central obverse design features three coats of arms: at the top is the imperial eagle symbolising the Empire; on the left, a human-faced eagle represents the city’s greater coat of arms; on the right, a half eagle accompanied by five diagonal lines denotes the city’s lesser coat of arms. Above the arms, a decorative dove marks the celebration of the jubilee year 1700, while the letters “GFN” at the bottom represent the initials of the mint official responsible for its issuance.

The outer inscription, SECVLVM NOVVM CELEBRAT RESP NORIBERGENSIS, translates as “The Republic of Nuremberg Welcomes the New Century.” At the centre of the reverse side, a lamb bearing a banner inscribed with “Pax” is depicted walking upon the Earth, an image associated with the Lamb of God and the atonement offered by Christ through his incarnation. The outer inscription, TEMPORA NOSTRA PATER DONATA PACE CORONA, means “The Father Crowns Our New Era with the Gift of Peace.”

Imperial Free Cities were cities within the Holy Roman Empire that were not subject to the rule of local princes and enjoyed significant economic and political importance, often obtaining numerous privileges. Nuremberg, as a site for imperial assemblies, maintained well-preserved structures from the Holy Roman Empire period. During the Nazi regime, Nuremberg was also used as a symbol of Germanic cultural heritage, leading to various constructions. After World War II, the Nuremberg Trials were held here, prosecuting Nazi leaders for their roles in waging war and committing atrocities against the Jewish population.
