This is a 1/2 Gulden gold coin issued by the Electorate of Hanover, with a nominal value equivalent to 1 Thaler. The obverse features the denomination marked in German, reflecting the use of multiple currency units in the German states at the time. The letter “S” below denotes the mint mark of the official responsible for coinage in Clausthal. The outer inscription “BR ET LUN DUX S R I A T ET EL 1750” is an abbreviation for “Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, 1750.” On the reverse, the central figure is a portrait of the monarch, with the outer inscription “GEORG II D G M B F ET H REX F D,” abbreviated from “George II, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith.”

The rulers of the Electorate of Hanover trace their lineage back to the House of Welf. Subsequent branches of the Brunswick-Lüneburg line retained the title of Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. In AD 1692, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, in recognition of the Hanoverian family’s contributions during the War of the Grand Alliance, elevated their duchy to the status of an Electorate. This elevation was officially recognised by the Imperial Diet in AD 1708.

The Hanoverian family’s ascension to the English throne is closely tied to the Church of England. Under the Act of Settlement of 1701, Catholics and their descendants were excluded from the line of succession to the English throne. As a result, George I became King of England, through his maternal lineage. Due to the royal family’s German heritage, the union of England and Hanover in foreign affairs led to England’s involvement in continental European conflicts, as the two states were diplomatically aligned.
