This is the 11th-class modern version of the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, which consists of a total of fifteen classes. The Republic of Austria recognises individuals’ outstanding achievements or services through national decorations and medals, established by the National Council of Austria. This particular medal is a privately commissioned miniature version.

The medal itself is made of 14ct gold and consists of two parts. The upper section features the famous single-headed black eagle from the Austrian coat of arms, with the coats of arms of Austria’s nine states arranged in a circle below. The states, in order, are Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Vienna. The lower section of the medal is based on a Maltese cross, adorned with a gold cross overlay. On the reverse side, it is stamped with the 585 gold content mark and the maker’s hallmark. As it is a privately commissioned piece, it imitates the original white background ribbon with red borders that the official medal would have.

The modern version of the “Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria” (German: Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich) was established by the National Council in AD 1952. This decoration, awarded by the Republic of Austria, has 15 classes and is given to individuals (both from Austria and abroad) who have made significant contributions to the country. Recipients are selected by the government and the award is conferred by the President of Austria according to the relevant laws.

The Federal President of Austria automatically receives the “Grand Star of the Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria” upon election, and this honour is held for life. This decoration is distinct from other awards in the Austrian honours system, such as the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art.
