This coin dates back to the reign of the third emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi, (AD 1661-1722). The coin is shaped in the typical form of a square-holed coin, entirely covered with a dark patina. On the obverse, the four Chinese characters “Kangxi Tongbao” are inscribed in sequence, following the order from top to bottom, right, and left.
The reverse side of the coin is barely legible, but the inscriptions on the left and right sides can be faintly identified as being in Manchu script. Based on the design of Kangxi Tongbao coins, this coin is likely from the central-level mint, either the Bao Quan Bureau (ᠪᠣᠣ ᠴᡳᠣᠸᠠᠨ) or the Bao Yuan Bureau (ᠪᠣᠣ ᠣᠶᡠᠸᠠᠨ). As such, it can be inferred that the left side bears the Manchu script “ᠪᠣᠣ” (Bao), but the Manchu character on the right, which would identify the specific mint, is too unclear to be determined with certainty.
During the Kangxi period, in addition to the centrally administered mints of the “Bao Quan Bureau” and the “Bao Yuan Bureau,” 24 regional mints were established across various provinces.
