This coin dates back to the reign of the third emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi, (AD 1661-1722). The coin is shaped in the typical form of a square-holed coin. On the obverse, the four Chinese characters “Kangxi Tongbao” are inscribed in sequence, following the order from top to bottom, right, and left. On the reverse, there is a Manchu character “ᠪᠣᠣ” (Bao) on the left side, alongside a character resembling Chinese script on the right side.
This coin weighs only 1.8 g, indicating that it was likely privately minted by individuals. Its counterfeit design appears to imitate the central-level Bao Quan Bureau and Bao Yuan Bureau, as evidenced by the presence of the Manchu character “ᠪᠣᠣ” (Bao) on the left side of the reverse.
During the Kangxi period, in addition to the centrally administered mints of the “Bao Quan Bureau” and the “Bao Yuan Bureau,” 24 regional mints were established across various provinces.
