This is a 1/4 ducat gold coin issued by the County of Stolberg, minted at the old mint located in its town. The obverse features a central depiction of a stag with antlers, symbolising the town’s coat of arms, with a column bearing the letter “S” in the background, representing the town’s name. The reverse displays the monogram “JC,” an abbreviation of the names of the ruling brothers, topped with a crown as a symbol of authority.
Stolberg was first documented in the year AD 1210 and likely obtained town rights around the 13th century. Shortly thereafter, contracts emerged concerning the distribution of mining shares and their processing in the town’s smelters and mint. Due to the discovery of mineral resources, the town’s minting industry persisted for a significant period. Even after the decline of mining resources in the 16th century, minting operations continued.
Present-day Stolberg has preserved its ancient buildings dating back to before the 18th century. The cobblestone streets of the old town, along with traffic regulations limiting vehicle speed and parking, have led to its designation as a historic preservation area, recognised by the German federal government. The well-preserved old mint workshop, along with the annual redesign and issuance of commemorative coins, continues to attract numerous coin collectors and tourists.
