This is a Jefferson wartime nickel from AD 1943, minted during the Second World War. Although the United States was not directly impacted by the war’s devastation, the government implemented metal rationing measures. As part of these efforts, the composition of the coin was specifically adjusted to conserve critical metal resources.

The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. To the left of the portrait is the inscription of the U.S. motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while on the right is “LIBERTY★1943,” representing the nation’s emphasis on the spirit of liberty and the year of issuance.

The reverse of the coin features a relief of Jefferson’s residence, Monticello, with the building’s name, “MONTICELLO,” inscribed below. Above the dome is an “S,” indicating that the coin was minted at the San Francisco Mint. Along the upper edge is the Latin motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” meaning “Out of Many, One.” At the lower edge, two inscriptions appear: the denomination “FIVE CENTS” and the full name of the country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

In AD 1938, the U.S. government introduced a new design for the Jefferson nickel, replacing the previous Buffalo nickel. However, following the attack on Pearl Harbour in AD 1941, which led to the U.S. entering World War II, the government began rationing metals for the war effort. Nickel, a critical material for producing tanks and aircraft, was especially in demand. As a result, in October AD 1942, the composition of the nickel was adjusted to 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. This wartime nickel was produced until the end of the war in AD 1945.
