This coin is suspected to be a “Guangxu Tongbao,” but it is heavily damaged, making it difficult to discern the inscriptions on its surface.
It is a square-holed coin, with a square hole at the centre of the obverse side, where the four characters “Guangxu Tongbao” are faintly visible around the edges. The reverse side also has a square hole at the centre, with traces of Manchu script on either side, though they are illegible. Overall, the coin’s surface is uneven, with irregularities around the edges, and its finish is inconsistent.
The Guangxu Tongbao was a currency minted during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. Initially, it was produced by the traditional method, but by the late 1880s, the production gradually shifted to machine minting. However, due to the initial challenges in meeting the demand for the new coins, both old and new versions of the currency circulated concurrently during the Guangxu period.
