This is a gold Royal and Patriotic Medal awarded in AD 1945 by the Swedish civil organisation “The Royal Patriotic Society” (Kungliga Patriotiska Sällskapet).
The obverse of the medal features a left-facing portrait of the reigning Swedish King, Gustaf V (reigned from 1907 to 1950). The left edge is inscribed with “GUSTAF.V.SVERIGES” (Gustaf V of Sweden), and the right edge with “GOT.O.VEND.KONUNG” (King of the Goths and Wends). Below the portrait is the name of the engraver, Adolf Lindberg, inscribed as “A.LINDBERG.”
The reverse of the medal has a five-line legend in the centre that reads “AT OTTO ANDERSSON FOR LANGVARIG TROGEN TJENST,” which translates to “To Otto Andersson for Long and Faithful Service.” The outer edge is inscribed with “AF KONGL. PATRIOTISKA SAELSKAPET,” indicating the full Swedish name of the association, “The Royal Patriotic Society.”
The Royal Patriotic Society was founded in AD 1772 with the aim of promoting economic development within Sweden. In AD 1802, the society received approval from the reigning king, Gustav IV, to issue medals, a practise that continues to this day.
