This medal, minted by Ethiopia in the year AD 1928, is a gold Haile Selassie I Coronation Medal. It marks the occasion of Haile Selassie I’s elevation from regent to king of Ethiopia.
The obverse of the medal features a portrait of King Haile Selassie I during his coronation, with the year of issuance inscribed beside the portrait. The reverse side bears an inscription in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. The medal was minted at the Addis Ababa Mint, located in the capital city of Ethiopia.
Haile Selassie I, originally named Tafari Makonnen, was the Emperor of Ethiopia from AD 1930 to AD 1974. Born into an aristocratic family, his father was a governor. Tafari supported Empress Taytu in a coup d’état of AD 1916 and served as heir apparent and regent. During his regency, he gained substantial popularity among the people, and Empress Taytu was compelled to crown Tafari as king in AD 1928. In AD 1930, following the death of Empress Taytu, Tafari formally ascended the throne as Emperor of the Ethiopian Empire, adopting the name Haile Selassie, meaning “Power of the Trinity.”
