This 20 Cash coin is a Double Flag Coin minted by Hunan Province. The obverse side features an inner and outer circle. Unfortunately, due to significant wear, the details of the two circles on the obverse side are no longer discernible. Despite the upper edge being illegible, the lower edge still shows the English inscription “Twenty Cash,” and the centre can be inferred to have a design similar to other Double Flag coins, likely featuring a rice ear pattern.
The reverse side also has an inner and outer circle. The outer circle bears the four Chinese characters “湖南省造” (Minted in Hunan Province) at the top, and the denomination “當制錢二十文” (Twenty Cash) at the bottom. There is a lotus pattern on each side; the left lotus is worn down, but the right one is still clearly visible and has a granular texture, making it quite distinctive. The Five-Coloured Flag and the Iron Blood Eighteen-Star Flag are tied and crossed in the centre, with a star shaped like a plum blossom above them. This “plum blossom star” is a key feature for identifying this coin type. Compared to the obverse side, the patina on the reverse side remains largely intact, presenting a natural appearance.
The Hunan Province Double Flag Coin, valued at Twenty Cash, was minted during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republican era, specifically around the time of the Xinhai Revolution. Due to the many different versions and large quantities produced, it is quite complex.
