This is a ten cash coin. On the obverse side, within the beaded circle, it is surrounded by soybean leaves and wheat ears, symbolizing abundant harvest. Outside the beaded circle, it bears the inscriptions “Republic of China”, “Henan Province Mint”, and two six-petaled flowers. The reverse side features two flags representing the “Five Races Under One Union” (Han, Manchu, Mongol, Hui, and Tibetan), tied with a ribbon in the centre. The upper edge is inscribed with “HO-NAN”, while the lower edge bears the words “TEN CASH”. On both sides are embossed floral branches, but the coin is worn and many of the designs and inscriptions are blurred.
In AD 1914, copper coins were officially renamed “copper currency”. The most significant difference between the copper currency issued during the Republic of China and those from the Qing Dynasty is that the dragon design was replaced with a design of abundant harvest composed of rice ears. Most of the copper coins minted in various provinces featured a crossed flag design on both sides, with inscriptions such as “Commemorative Coin of the Founding of the Republic” or “Copper Currency of the Republic of China”.
Among the myriad of copper coins from the Republic era, the Henan copper coins have a distinctive style. Apart from the fifty-cash and hundred-cash coins minted in the 20th year of the Republic, all other Henan copper coins predominantly feature the abundant harvest design on the obverse and the double-flag design on the reverse. Due to the consistent use of the double-flag design, these coins are colloquially known as Henan Double-Flag Coins.
