This 20 Cash coin is a Double Flag Coin minted by Hunan Province. The obverse side features the double flags. The upper edge has been worn down, and the characters are no longer legible, except for a single English letter “H.” The lower edge, also worn due to age, still shows “20 cash.” In the centre are the Five-Coloured Flag and the Iron Blood Eighteen-Star Flag, tied and crossed. Notably, this coin lacks the five-petal and eight-petal chrysanthemum flowers found on similar copper coins, making this absence a key feature for distinguishing this coin type.
The reverse side features an inner and outer circle, marking the most significant difference between the obverse and reverse sides. The inner circle displays the Jiahe design composed of “two ears and four flowers,” which differs significantly from the “five ears and two flowers” pattern found on other Double Flag copper coins. The upper edge of the outer circle bears the four Chinese characters “中華民國” (Republic of China), while the lower edge reads “當制錢二十文” (Twenty Cash). There is a lotus pattern on each side; the right lotus pattern shows slight wear but its shape is still visible.
The Hunan Province Double Flag Coin, valued at Twenty Cash, was minted during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republican era, specifically around the time of the Xinhai Revolution. Due to the many different versions and large quantities produced, it is quite complex.
