This is a two cents silver coin produced by the Guangdong Mint. On the obverse side, the upper and lower edges are inscribed with “KWANG-TUNG PROVINCE” and “TWENTY CENTS” respectively, separated by four-petal floral designs on each side. The center prominently displays the denomination “20” in numerical form, adorned with a rope knot pattern.
On the reverse side, the upper and lower edges are inscribed in Standard Script with the characters “中華民國九年” (Ninth Year of the Republic of China) and “廣東省造” (Made in Guangdong Province) respectively. These inscriptions are separated by the same four-petal floral designs as on the obverse side. The center features the characters “貳毫銀幣” (two-mace silver coin) in a vertical arrangement. On both the obverse and reverse sides, the central and outer inscriptions are separated by beaded circles.
From the Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China period, it was customary in the Guangdong region to use silver coins. By the early years of the Republic of China, most of the circulating currency consisted of dragon silver coins minted in Fujian and Guangdong provinces during the Xuantong era. These were later replaced by Guangdong silver coins. Since Guangxi initially did not have a mint, Guangdong silver coins were also used in the Guangxi market until the establishment of the Guangxi Mint in the 8th year of the Republic of China (AD 1919).
