This is a flower coin modified from the commonly circulated “Yongzheng Tongbao” during the reign of the fourth emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Yongzheng (AD 1722-AD 1735). The coin appears as a pair of concentric circles, with noticeable differences in elevation and colour between the inner and outer circles on both sides. However, after being processed and smoothed, the boundary between the two circles is no longer distinct, and the entire coin is coated in a black hue.
The obverse side of the coin bears the inscription “Yongzheng Tongbao” in regular script, arranged sequentially from top, bottom, right, to left. However, due to the interference of the black colour and processing, the characters are not clearly visible and difficult to discern. On the reverse side, the original Manchu and Chinese inscriptions have been smoothed out, making it impossible to determine the place of minting. The back is processed to resemble a tortoiseshell pattern, divided into nine sections, with a circular decoration near the edges of each section.
Following the reform of “one province, one mint” during the later years of the Kangxi reign, the number of local mints during the Yongzheng era was reduced to 18. Besides being minted at the central-level Baoquan Bureau and Baoyuan Bureau, the Yongzheng Tongbao was also produced at furnaces in 13 local-level mints.
