This coin is a 1 Thaler silver coin minted during the reign of King Frederick Augustus I of the Kingdom of Saxony.

The obverse of the coin features a left-facing profile portrait of Frederick Augustus I in uniform, surrounded by the German inscription “FRIEDR . AUGUST KOENIG V. SACHSEN,” which means “Frederick Augustus, King of Saxony.” The reverse of the coin displays the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Saxony, flanked by palm branches, with a crown above. The German inscription “ZEHN EINE FEINE MARK 1823 I. G. S.” around the coin indicates its denomination and minting year.

“I. G. S.” refers to the mint mark of Johann Georg Studer, who was born in AD 1763 and served as the director of the Dresden Mint from AD 1813.

Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Saxony: The coat of arms of the Kingdom of Saxony consists of a shield with alternating black and yellow stripes, and a green crancelin (crown wreath) running diagonally from the upper left to the lower right.

The Dresden Mint was established in AD 1556 and began minting for the German Empire in AD 1872. Around AD 1876, the mint reached its peak production, but its operations began to decline thereafter, leading to the dismissal of many workers. The mint ultimately ceased operations in AD 1887.

This silver coin was issued as a circulating currency during the reign of King Frederick Augustus I of the Kingdom of Saxony, who ruled from AD 1806 to AD 1827. Following the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, Saxony was elevated to a kingdom, making him its first king. His reign coincided with the Napoleonic Wars, during which he allied with Napoleon and remained a loyal ally. Despite his support for Napoleon, he faced setbacks after Napoleon’s defeat in AD 1815, resulting in Saxony losing some of its territories.
