This silver coin was issued in AD 1911 during the reign of King Otto of Bavaria, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold, representing a 2 mark denomination from the Kingdom of Bavaria.

The obverse features a profile portrait of Prince Regent Luitpold, encircled by the German inscription “LVITPOLD PRINZ- REGENT V. BAYERN 1821 * 12 MÆRZ * 1911,” indicating “Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria, 1821 March 12 1911.” Below the portrait is the letter “D,” denoting its minting at the Bavarian Mint. The reverse showcases the royal coat of arms of the German Empire, surrounded by the inscription “DEUTSCHES REICH 1911,” translating to “German Empire 1911,” along with the denomination, “ZWEI MARK,” meaning “two mark” in German.

Coat of arms:
The coat of arms of the German Empire prominently features a black eagle with outstretched wings, its head turned left, adorned with a red beak, tongue, and talons, and topped with the imperial crown of Germany. Around its neck, the eagle wears the collar of the Order of the Black Eagle. On its chest, it bears a round shield displaying the Prussian eagle, which holds a sceptre and orb, each symbol of royal authority, and also wears a crown, with another shield on its chest. This specific design was in use from AD 1871 until AD 1918.

The Bavarian Mint, located in Munich, is a national minting facility established in AD 1158. It produces both domestic and international circulation coins and is one of Germany’s four major mints. Since AD 1871, the letter “D” has been used to mark coins minted at this facility.

This silver coin was issued during the reign of King Otto of Bavaria, who ruled from AD 1886 to AD 1913. Due to severe mental illness, Otto never actively governed; his uncle Luitpold and cousin Ludwig served as regents. Luitpold was the third son of King Ludwig I. Since AD 1886, he had served as Prince Regent due to Otto being diagnosed with a mental illness. Following the issuance of this commemorative silver coin, Luitpold passed away in Munich the following year. This silver coin, minted to commemorate the 90th birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold, was issued in three denominations: 2 marks, 3 marks, and 5 marks.
