This is a denarius silver coin minted during the Roman Republic period, approximately between 114 BC and 113 BC, under the name of “Mn Aemilius Lepidus.” It is worth noting that half a century later, in 43 BC, another individual bearing the same name, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, became one of the “Second Triumvirate” alongside Octavian and Mark Antony, jointly ruling the Roman Republic. However, the exact relationship between the two individuals remains uncertain in academic circles. The obverse of the coin features a right-facing bust of the goddess Roma, wearing a laurel wreath and a small crown. Below the goddess is a symbol of a “✽,” and to the right is the Latin inscription “ROMA,” with “MA” forming a monogram.
The reverse of the coin depicts an equestrian holding a spear, with his mount standing atop one of Rome’s well-known landmarks, the aqueducts, which supplied water to the city’s inhabitants. Below the bridge pier are the three Latin letters “LEP,” while the Latin legend, “MN·AE-M-ILIO,” is an abbreviation of the full name of MN Aemilius Lepidus, with “MN” forming a monogram at the beginning.
