Item number: A267

Material: Gold

Size: 13.3 x 13.3 mm

Manufactured by: Royal Mint of Spain

Provenance: Fuchin Coin 2024

This coin was issued in AD 1783 during the reign of King Carlos III of Spain, representing a 1/2 Escudo denomination.

The obverse of the coin features a side portrait of Carlos III, surrounded by the inscription “CAROL·III·D·G·HISP·R·1783”, meaning “Carlos III, by the Grace of God, King of Spain”, along with the year of minting. The reverse bears a lesser royal coat of arms of Spain, with the letter ‘M‘ on the left side, denoting the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid, and the letters J. D on the right, which are the initials of the engraver Juan San Fauri Domingo.

Royal Coat Of Arms:
The object features a lesser royal coat of arms of Spain depicted as a square shield divided into four sections, each alternately adorned with two lions and two castle motifs. Above the shield rests a crown, and it is encircled by a collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This design was continuously used from the early 18th century until AD 1868.

This coin is part of the second type of the escudo. The first type of the coin did not feature the design of the collar of Golden Fleece and the there was inscription around the edge, while in the third edition, the initials representing the mint and the mintmaster were engraved around the Golden Fleece.

Escudo:
The escudo, which means “shield” in Spanish, was a currency circulated from the 16th – 19th centuries. The first gold escudo was issued in AD 1535, but it did not become the principal currency unit of Spain until the reign of Philip II from AD 1580 to AD 1598. The obverse of the escudo typically featured a half-length portrait of the reigning monarch, while the reverse displayed the royal coat of arms of Spain, with most of the coins being minted in Madrid or Seville.

(Escudo):
