This is the highest class of the Royal Order of the Sword (Kungliga Svärdsorden):the Commander Grand Cross class. It was originally founded by King Frederick I of Sweden in AD 1748 as the kingdom’s third-highest honor, with the preceding two grades being the Royal Order of the Seraphim and the Order of the Polar Star. The Order of the Sword was initially established with two grades: the Commander grade and the Knight grade. Over time, the order has expanded to include five classes (Refer to the table for details).
Grades of Order | Established in | The positioning for wearing |
Commander Grand Cross | AD 1772 | Wears the badge on the collar, or on the sash, with the star on the left chest. |
Commander First Class | AD 1748 | Wears the badge on a necklet, plus the star on the left chest. |
Commander | AD 1873 | Wears the badge on a necklet. |
Knight First Class | AD 1748 | Wears the badge on a ribbon on the left chest. |
Knight | AD 1889 | Wears the badge on a ribbon on the left chest. |
The Commander Grand Cross Class of the order can be positioned on the collar, and it can also be placed on the blue and yellow combined sash, symbolizing the Swedish flag. The main body of the order is a white enamel Maltese cross, with the second-class Knight Class being made of silver, while the other classes are crafted from gold. There are four gold crowns representing the monarchy between the arms of the cross. The two highest classes of the order feature crossed gold and blue swords on both sides, with each having a vertically downward-pointing gold and blue sword, forming a decorative ensemble. These four directional sword decorations are secured behind the cross with a gold ribbon. At the top, it is adorned with a crown set with white, green, and red gemstones, connected to a clasp.
On the obverse side of the medal, there is a vertically upward-pointing gold sword at the center, with the sword blade positioned between three gold crowns against a deep blue enamel background. On the reverse side, the central motif symbolizes victory, featuring a gold sword piercing through a laurel wreath, all set against a blue enamel background with the Latin inscription “Pro Patria,” meaning “For the Fatherland.”
On the side of the cross in the upper right corner, there are markings from the jewellery manufacturer C.F. Carlman, including the “CFC Crown mark” maker mark and the gold purity mark “18K C9.” The C.F. Carlman company was founded in AD 1855 by its founder, Carl Frederik Carlman, in the capital city of Stockholm. Carl Frederik Carlman’s exceptional craftsmanship led the company to monopolize the production of Swedish orders and decorations from AD 1875 to 1904, expanding its business to other European countries such as France and Norway.
