Kingdom of Ireland ½ penny
Item number: A17
Year: AD 1723
Material: Copper
Provenance: Fuchin Coin 2023
This coin, dating back to AD 1723, circulated as a halfpenny copper coin within the Kingdom of Ireland under the rule of George I, who concurrently held the title of King of Ireland as part of the British monarchy. Both sides of this coin exhibit significant wear, yet on its obverse, faint traces of George I wearing a laurel wreath on his head can be discerned. Surrounding his profile is the Latin inscription “GEORGIUS.DEI.GRATIA.REX.,” signifying George, God, Grace, and King.
The coin’s reverse features a female harpist facing left, her left hand resting on a traditional Irish instrument, the Celtic harp. However, the extent of wear on the coin has made it challenging to discern specific features of the harp. Similarly, the Latin inscription “.HIBERNIA.1723.” denoting the circulation in Ireland and the year of issue, originally positioned along the upper edge of the reverse side, is now illegible due to wear.
