10 New Francs (Hercules)
Item number: A14
Year: AD 1966
Manufactured by: Monnaie de Paris
Material: Silver
Provenance: Fuchin Coin 2023
This silver coin is a denomination of 10 new francs issued by the French Fifth Republic in the year AD 1966. The obverse of the coin features the denomination and the year of issue, surrounded by laurel leaves. On the outer edges on both sides are inscriptions of the country’s name: French Republic.
The main visual concept on the reverse side of the coin draws inspiration from the sketches of Augustin Dupré, a renowned French sculptor from the 18th century. At the center stands the legendary Greek hero, Hercules, draped in the skin of the Nemean lion he slayed, with both hands resting on the shoulders of two females. The female on the left holds a staff with a Phrygian cap, while the one on the right carries a set square. The handshake between the two women symbolizes the ideals of democratic republic and scientific rationality that emerged after the French Revolution. At the bottom is the cursive signature of the sculptor, Dupré.
