This coin is a ten-cash Republic of China commemorative coin which was issued in AD 1920. Following the victory of the AD 1911 Revolution, the Qing Emperor abdicated, leading to the establishment of the Republic of China. In the early years of the Republic, commemorative coins were minted to replace the copper coins of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, the interim president, Sun Yat-sen, proposed a new coin design featuring the motif of “depicting a model of five grains in the centre, symbolizing the abundance of harvests and encouraging agricultural development.” Subsequently, many provinces participated in the minting and issuance of new coins, with the dual flags being a common design pattern on these coins.
The obverse of this coin depicts a crossed arrangement of the Eighteen-Star Flag and the Five-Colored Flag, with a pair of interlinked sheaves below. Above and below the dual flags, the coin is stamped with the denominations “Republic of China” and “Founding Commemorative Coin,” respectively. The prominence of the character “民” (min) at the top symbolizes the priority of the people. Both sides are adorned with decorative branches and flowers.
On the reverse side, the inner bead circle features the denomination “Ten Wen” inscribed directly, surrounded by interlinked sheaves of wheat and leaves of soybeans. The outer bead circle is ornamented with a continuous leaf pattern. Both faces of the coin are equipped with inner serrations and outer borders, while the coin edge remains smooth.
