This coin is a distinctively designed coin produced by the Chengtu Arsenal. On the obverse side of the coin, there is an image of a horse, while the reverse side features a bundle of orchids, hence the name horse and orchid coin.

Since the establishment of the Republic of China, various warlords in Sichuan engaged in power struggles, resulting in regional fragmentation. To solidify control over their respective territories, these warlords minted horse and orchid coins. It wasn’t until AD 1935, with the implementation of currency reforms by the Republic of China government, that horse and orchid coins were replaced by legal tender.

馬蘭錢是四川鑄幣的一種獨特造型，錢幣正面是一匹馬，背面是一束蘭花，因此稱為馬蘭幣。

民國以來，四川各地軍閥混戰，形成割據。軍閥為了鞏固對管轄防區的統治而鑄馬蘭幣。直到公元1935年民國政府推行法幣改革，馬蘭幣被法幣取代。
