In AD 1698, Peter the Great returned to Russia after traveling in Western Europe for a year while concealing his identity as tsar. Immediately launched a comprehensive reform of Russia’s wire coining technique, which was deeply influenced by the Mongols, as well as the currency conversion and weight specifications established by Yelena since the fifteenth century.

During the reign of Peter the Great (AD 1689-1725), the standard weight of his wire silver coins was reduced from 0.38 grams to the new standard of 0.28 grams in AD 1698 in order to reduce the trade deficit with European countries. Most of the Peter the Great wire silver coins in circulation today are cast according to the lower latter standard.

Peter the Great’s monetary reforms in AD 1700-1704 replaced the fifteenth-century Elena standard with the decimal system. When Peter the Great returned to his country, he recruited many technical personnel from the Holy Roman Empire (today’s Germany).

Among these technological upstarts, called Germans, was the medalist Gottfried Haupt, who assisted Peter the Great in making Western-style medals and coins in Moscow. With the injection of new technology, the wire-minted coins in Russia, which had a history of more than 300 years, stopped being minted in AD 1717 and went into history.
