During the period of the Jin, Southern, and Northern Dynasties, frequent conflicts, political unrest, and economic volatility resulted in a destabilized monetary system. In an effort to conserve copper resources, the five-zhu coins progressively decreased in size, with some colloquially termed “goose eyes” or “chicken eyes,” while others were subjected to edge-clipping, leading to the moniker of clipped five-zhu coins. The term “Six Dynasties five-zhu coins” refers to the five-zhu coins minted during the reigns of the Wu, Eastern Jin, Southern Song, Qi, Liang, and Chen dynasties, all of which established their capitals in Nanjing. These coins were generally characterized by inferior craftsmanship, displaying incomplete inscriptions and strokes. Variations in inscriptions were evident, with “五銖” (five zhu) occasionally inscribed as “五金” (five metals), or written in reverse order as “銖五” (zhu five).
