During the period from the 3rd to the 10th year of the Republic of China (ROC), the production of silver coins featuring the image of General Yuan Shikai, with various mints across the nation engaged in these productions, resulting in widespread circulation. However, after the failure of Yuan Shikai’s attempt to establish a monarchy, the production ceased. Among these coins, one-dollar coins issued in the 3rd, 8th, and 9th years of the ROC, namely the “scarce years,” hold particular significance. Notably, the coins from the 8th year of the ROC are considered the most valuable among collectors.
The obverse of this coin features a profile portrait of General Yuan Shikai in military attire, with the inscription “Republic of China, Year 3” on the upper border. In the centre, there is the denomination “One Dollar” written vertically, while on either side, two bundles of grain stalks are tied together with ribbons, symbolizing the abundance of harvest. Both sides of the coin have dentil edges, and the coin’s edge itself is serrated.
