In the 22nd year of Kuang Hsu (AD 1896), the Viceroy of Szechuan appealed to the Imperial Court to establish a mint as a part of the Chengtu Arsenal. Two years later, the mint was finally completed in June.
Xuan Tong Yuanbao was one of the machine-struck silver coins that were circulated during the Xuantong era (AD 1909-1911) of the Qing Dynasty. These coins adhered to the traditional monetary system, using the unit of “liang” for valuation.
